When I was in the second year of college, I took a summer job.
I was hired as a service crew at Wendy’s along Buendia near LRT station.
It was my very first job, my first taste of salary and my first time to meet an “interesting” boss.
My experience as a service crew gave me an idea what my corporate life will be like after graduation.
You may look good in your office attire, neck ties, makeup or high heels for ladies, but that won’t change the fact that you’re a slave of your boss.
Think about this for a second.
Malaya ka nga ba?
When someone dictates how much money you’ll receive kinsenas katapusan?
Malaya ka nga ba?
When your manager tells you what time you should report for work and what time you can go home?
Malaya ka nga ba?
When your boss tells you when to go for vacation? Or if you can even have a vacation?
Malaya ka nga ba?
When they can just fire you anytime they want to BUT you have to give them 30 days notice if you want to resign?
Malaya ka nga ba?
Fe Sinco says
Yes, I agree with you there is no “some” freedom of choices when one is employed. Yet employees can do nothing about it because it’s the reality to get employer’s achieving its business overall objectives. But we have the choice… . all things being equal, the opportunity to developing and improving our “reason for being” on earth – is knowing our selves – which most of it – our potentials, undiscovered talents and skills. So we have to research from within ourselves the hows and whys we most of the time failed when faced with challenges! Getting our full feet to business is NOT A JOKE. It translates to good preparation i.e., appreciating and studying the business environment, the enthusiasm to initiate “business differences” considering the stiff competition in the market, and of course the tiyaga to get through the daily nitty-grittys!
Thank you.
Rod Zuniga says
Abner B. San Juan says

I just hate my job because I feel alienated to it all the time. I think it’s not in my personality to be in front of the computer doing desk jobs. I’m more of a free spirit searching for challenges. I really love to cook food and add a twist to it. I hope someday I can have my own restaurant and share my creations to the world. By that, I can say that I am free from the 8-5 suck job that I have currently.
Cheers Jon! You really motivate many aspiring pinoy entrepreneurs. God bless!

So what are the best thing to do? dont be a slave refuse conformity get out mind you own Business. Hi Jon,
Naisip ko lang: ang salita eschatology (study of the last things). Mayroon bang relation ang eskapology sa eschatology?
Salamat.
Jon Oraña says
Hi Ruperto.
Eskapo (escape). Meaning, escape the corporate world.
JamesVP says
You left the corporate world because you want to ESCAPE THE CUBICLE, right? But now you are finding that, like those big corporations, you needed to trap others to the cubicle also to help you realize the ‘freedom’ you long for. I think this would be true to every entrepreneur who hire (sentence) others to work for them, limit their income, decide when these should report for work, when to go home to their families, when to have their vacation leave, etc etc. So, when would the cycle break?
Just a thought…hhhmmm
bel says
I agree with you. But there is a way not to repeat the cycle. That is what you have to think about. Kc I think greed is what makes it a a cycle. So in your own company if you happen to put one Itama mo ang mga sa tingin mo mali na ginagawa ng mga kumpanya. Then do not be afraid to encourage your employees to become entrepreneurs as well. Teach, train and motivate them. Do not be afraid of losing them as well kc it’s a reality employees are come and go rather think of it as achievement na nakatulong ka sa kanila once na nag succeed din sila. That way it will not be a cycle instead dadami kayo na entrepreneur. However, I believe there are people that are tailored to become entrepreneurs and there are those that are satisfied of being employees. The latter ones may not become a prisoner if they find their work fulfilling. i.e. they are looking forward to going to office everyday kasi masaya sila. the working environment is fun. Many leave their work kasi hindi maganda ang management. That is why I am starting my own business and my goal is to correct all the mistakes that my previous employers did lalo na sa paghingi ng bakasyon and I want to give chance to people that has the skills and passion not necessarily people who got a degree or diploma in college. I believe marami ang under grad so college pero magagaling hindi lang nabibigyan ng chance because of these company rules. Cheers !

My house and lot w/c is under mortgage here in Manila and in the Province. We have a Sari store with a gross daily of 1k and a net profit of 200 per day around. How can I improve this condition. I was studying the feasibility of running an interest cafe in my Manila domiciliary but for that I have to give myself another shot of entering the corporate world again for another contract for me to raise up the capital.
I would like to hear your point of view for a person like me with 3k remaining at hand. Something that would work with a meager budget?
Charlotte says
Talagang hindi nga malaya. But the sad reality is, almost all of us will start as employees. Which I think that somehow is a good training and/or exposure in the aspect of interpersonal relationships with co-workers, with your boss or with everyone in the workplace. Once you put up your own business, even if you just have a few employees, you already know how to deal with them because you were once an employee. You know the importance of teamwork in the attainment of your business goals. And you know for a fact that you can’t do it alone.
Lucila says
Allan Mantaring says
Hi, Lucila im just giving my opinion on your question.

I was a Radio broadcaster And a Teacher at the same time. I earners a litle like 14k a month. Iniisip ko na kasangkapan ng Dios ang lahat ng nasa paligid ko (galing sa sexurity guard papunta Sa Inventors ng kompanya.)I Felt that gratefulness daily because they gave me the opportunities to learn And to earn! Ganito kasi ang itinuturo sa amin ng kompanya, think the positive meaning of every events And u will be Free from negative thoughts that pulls you Down! In effect you suffer a lot of frustrations, distress, depression o anger towards your Company or boss or the world in General!
So tje Company offered me to be a partner of His business coz he can not afford to lost me..now I am a business partner who learn from My job And eventually earn the trust, respect And money of the Company!
Eskapology is Good only for those who are being trapped from work that they DONt Love or for those who are being forced to work for money ‘S sake! And IM telling you, you will always failed multiply Times just like the experience of Jon ( with Due respect to Jon Due to wrong values And beliefs about work And business ) till you truly Found your Love or passion to a certain Service or work that you have!
And today I would like to inform you that you can be truly rich in all aspects( emotionally, financially & spritually) of life if you Love what you do. Remembers when you work you are In The business already of selling your Service to your Company or your boss. Your boss Bought your expertise And not your degree! He Bought your productivity And not your time! Thats why the boss as your client will replace you anytime if you deliver poor Service or produce because you are Trading your output witj His money.!
Here is the problem of jon’s
Belief soon..he can not trust any worker under His Company because he may suspect that same worker will escape from His trap( His Company) as what he did! Unless he will upgrade His values And beliefs about employment towards business partnership!
However, I you do business witj Love as what Jon And otjer mentors of success told US, we will always be successful . Why I am so sure? Coz if you fail in earning profit you win by learning experiences that you will be your capital for a profitable business ..jon’ model of succesS!

There is, but the degree of freedom varies according to the employees (1) position in the company; The top-level manager exercises more freedom than the middle-level and same more than the lower-level managers; (2) the level of relationship; By experience, working as co-partners in a business gives you half-share on the freedom to decide on matters. Solely initiating the business also puts you in the position to be vulnerable to situations in the external environment affecting your business operations and choices.
Yet, freedom starts in the mind by understanding your real worth, and taking it by heart, and living it on a daily basis. Whether you venture alone in a business, or stay in an 8-5 job, enjoy that certain degree of freedom you have. 🙂
esper says
once employed you are a slave of the company. You can be there for the rest of your lives and just be contented in being a slave driver of your employer. You cannot do anything about it coz you want to earn. It’s so hard to earn money so you will think twice if you stay forever being an employee or start your own business. Because venturing in a business have so many risks also. You have free time, you will invest, even in a small scale business you have to think first if it will work or be successful. So it depends on the person to stay an employee for the rest of his life or be an independent entrepreneur.

As long as may work ako at may part time business na gusto ko mapalago it’s a big blessing for me. Pero i know madami pa ako pagdadaanan and I’m willing to take the risk 🙂

Hi John,

Sa akin naman po, eh love your work first. Kung employee ka sa ngayon mahalin mo ito, maybe that’s your calling at dyan ka magaling. At kung gusto mo talagang mag-negosyo, sabi nga ni Jon, prepare and plan for it. Know yourself first, baka naman di ka talaga pang-negosyo. Doing business is really good, especially if you love what you’re doing. Sa work naman din, if you love what you’re doing, ok ka dyan. Not all are cut for being a businessman. Many are the plans of a man, but God’s plan will prevail. Not being too religious, ang akin lang po is put God first and He will surely guide us & show us the right way :)…Try nyo po & God will never fail you.

hi jon,*
I’m a Civil Engineer by profession and im working here in our city hall for almost 22 years, fortunately i’m able to run my business parallel to my work . but as of now. parang na buburn out na talaga ako. parang nagsasawa na rin sa araw araw na stress sa buhay ko..
i need your advise..
thank you.

It is really very true as you have spoken the kingdom of reality. In the real world of corporate jobs, we employees are really not free to do anything because we are just locked inside the closed box of corporate slavery where our freedom is controlled by our employers.
Each one of us wants to be free and here you are who have done it and gone that far and came back with a great success in life braving any risks that might befall while on the way to reach the goal of success where you are now. I am one of the employees who would also wish and succeed like you. I am one of the employees who want to be out of that corporate slavery and I want to be free like a bird in the sky following your program.
Thank you Sir, Jon.
Michael says
Well technically employees cant be slaves to the corporate 9 to 6 job. That is, if you only let it.
Sometimes mas fortunate pa ang employees dahil pag ayaw nya sa kumpanya all he has to do is resign.
Pero look if you own a company with lots of problem he cant easily just fold it up and say i quit

Hi Jon,
I don’t know how I got into your website, but the fact is I really like what you are sharing with us.
I remember what you have said in one of your email:
“Bayaran mo muna yung utang mo at saka ka mag negosyo” (not the exact words)
Is this really the case, or you can do it at the same time? (bayaran ang utang at mag negosyo)

This topic was certainly related on my present situation. My current job was not even a work life balance for me “sad but true”. I’ve been working for almost 3 years in the firm and my daily routine was like”going work early then leaving office late” I came to realized that I was been prisoned of my job in other words, I have no freedom at all to work on my other perspective goals and activities in life. ” I won’t regret myself for what’s going on in my career life right now because in the first place this is really my main decision hence, I need to be accountable for the outcome. Instead of thinking the problem I have to search for the solution on how I can finally escape and getting out of my comfort zone. Can you please advice me what’s appropriate business for me? I am actually engage in selling different items such as: perfume/make-up/lotion/bag & etc. but this is only a sideline while I am still working just to earn extra income the profit its not really big and the market nowadays have been too competitive. Looking forward to hear from your best advice.
Thank you sir Jon for being an inspiration to us!

i just want to give my view on “freedom” from the bosses. Yes, nobody wants to be a 8-to-5pm slave. So we need to start business so we can be our own boss. but starting and doing business is not left to us all doing the chores; we’ve got to hire people to help us do our business. Are not these people similar to what you were prior to your business? Is freedom is about enslaving others? You see, if all workers will seek freedom from their bosses then we dont have business to talk about for business involves goods and services and they all need people both free and slaves.

You slap this to my face and it hurts, but it’s true. My biggest concern from day to day, 8 to 5 job is a work colleague who feels he’s beyond everyone: that is he can scream on top of his lungs whenever he wants to scold anyone. He has no remorse to his “victim” that he/she just has the most humiliating experience of his/her life. Nobody needs to go through life experiencing that.

Kaye Tee says
Hi,
My name is Karen 39 y/o, I am hesitant to share my thoughts in this forum but I’m breakun my silence. My story goes like this, I came from a brood of 7, middle child and family of lawyers. An accountant by proffesion, joined ADB during my senior year in College as a Community Development Specialist, joined the government agency where almost half of my family members are employed (ufff) but all eligible. Street smart by nature, not my mom’s pet. Took law school and finished my sophomore year, worked overseas for greener pasture or I can say it was my sweet escape after my divorce with my husband. Got tired in the corporate world in Dubai after 6 years. Went back home for good. Worked in BPO for more than a year just to fill in my idle time and to support my daily needs. First business attempt: partnered with my Arab friend and run a manpower agency for 2 years, gave up due to complicated and undecided vision and mission. Attended Sinulog and there I was introduced to Mining business, hauling services in particular. At first, I was just a plain freelance contract seeker then later faced a fraudulent contract which discouraged me but with my effort and good faith because I have learned that in that field you must be determine and love what you are doing and you’ll hit the mark. Worked hard and met my mentor and still my gen con up to date. He is on his late 40’s before he was a jeepney driver then dream of working in Manila with his wife. An old Chinese guy became their boss and gained their trust and when the latter died he entrusted all his business to Boss Badz (my mentor, my gen con, my 2nd dad, my boss). Despite of this, he remain his for on the ground and live with the words the old man taught him. Work hard and you won’t feel the hardlife’s treat. He taught me all those and I believe I adopt it with my life. I now have my own supply chain company and rental services. A total of 90 dump trucks in Mining industry, small trucks deployed in Fortune Tobacco, I supply diesel for my own trucks as well as spare parts which I import it from China where I got all my trucks. Manage a staycation condo units in Metro Manila for service rental, long term contract for private vehicles and counting. But still I never categorize myself as a rich businesswoman rather I got to hide when my mom introduce me to her friends every time I go home. I am a mother or my 12 yr old not so baby boy whom I dedicate my hardship and my parents I am still their not so favorite daughter to my mom but the diamond of my dad whom I religiously grant his wishes like luxury cars, his dream Harley Davidson bike and BMW matrix bike. I owe to them where I am now. I think that’s the important thing in life, to love whatever you are doing in life and it will compensate you. Remain decent and normal. Give the right compensation for your people so they will not cheat on you. Everything in this world is just temporary, we are just one of the ways and things whom God or Allah ( I’m a Muslim since birth and I’m proud) entrusted us and we should take care of that. 2 years ago I was diagnosed with cancer of the kidney stage 2 passive but never treated here in the Philippines, instead I entrusted my health to my Chinese doctors in Guangzhou since my folks have no idea that I’m sick thou its obvious that I lose weight a lot since 3yrs now but I manage to tell them that I am just enjoying life and u wanna bring back the old sexy me. Now I am married and happy with my dream boy, ex bf cuz he is now my husband. I define happiness when you are just thankful everyday for waking up and being with the person you love truly nothing more nothing less. No hatred and bitterness. I learn to appreciate little things and be contented for what we already have and for not what we still don’t have. Just be happy always and smile. Life is perfect.
I hope my story gave everyone a smile. Let love be always in our heart. God bless us all.

Good luck and more power to your site.

Hi Jon, I had been an employee for a data company for almost 17 years. At first, the Filipino-owned business process outsourcing company had good intentions and good management practices, but it gradually deteriorated into a mismanaged company. Now that company went bankrupt just this February of 2017 and now I’m left with no job and had to resort to a home-based job just to feed my wife and my daughter. Life is hard but I have to get up and reboot my goals in life. Your life story and success in business serve as my inspiration to finally get out of this quagmire that I am into right now. I’m slowly picking up the pieces and hope to at least start my online business and continue reaching for my personal goals and someday I’d be able to help others too. Thanks for updating me online on your mentoring activities. More power to you.
