Sandy says
Hi Jon,
Can I ask for advise?
Im a believer of entrepreneurship, I have done some reflections on my passion, what I’m good at and what problem/service to solve and I knew I wanted to set up my own Kumon center. I’ve done some pre-leg work, I passed the exams and interview already, and to open up the center by Feb’13 the next step is to attend several trainings in the coming weeks. But these are all weekdays and would interfere with my work. I am confused and torn as to whether I should consider quitting work already so I can focus on setting up my business. I understand you promote sideline business and grow it first before quitting work. I am currently earning P50k net, i have a car plan with the company and would most likely get a good bonus by Feb’13 and a good salary increase by next year. Which makes deciding even harder! Should I forego Kumon for now? If i dont continue my application, the next batch of trainings will be for a June’13 center opening. But that would be dependent on Kumon whether they would accept me for the next batch. They’re a bit strict with their franchisors, maybe to weed out those that are not so serious about it. Please help. Hope you could part some advise. Thanks. Sandy.
Jon Oraña says
Hi Sandy.
First, I’m pro “part-time” and not “sideline”. Part-timers are people like you who are serious in building a business than just quick one-time income.
Consider all other possibilities on how you can attend those trainings. Maybe you can talk to your boss if there’s a possibility for you to work on week-ends or late night.
Or if you need to pay extra, maybe you can have a special training on weekend from Kumon.
Talk to your boss and to franchisor for any possibility. I believe if you can sincerely show to your franchisor that you’re serious about their business, explain to them your situation, they may come up with a better option.
Or maybe you can ask one of your employee to attend the seminar. I don’t know BUT find a way. There’s always a way.
Again, don’t quit your job. Use your salary as a safety net. Build a business where you can scale it so it won’t be dependent too much on you.
Wish you the best!
Sandy says
Oops, my apologies. I really meant part time, I must be really confused!
Actually the Kumon franchise entails that the franchisee is hands on full. Quitting the job is the first question they ask in the first meeting. But I did not know that I need to quit even before I get approved (so I can attend the weekday trainings)
Anyway, I agree with you I think I still need my job as a safety net. If I can’t start the Kumon now, I would have to rethink of another part time that suits me, something I can build and scale even if I keep my job.
Again, thanks Jon!
Jon Oraña says
No problem. Frankly, I prefer that people start their own business and not buy any franchise. I’ll probably do a podcast why I prefer to be independent business owner.
Fe Sinco says
Hi Jon!
Your episodes are very inspiring. Today our world has different businesses that were established already. And I believed it’s hard to compete especially those big capitalist. Though I agree with you that starting a business needs a lot of thinking … exploring all possibilities (of course more of the positive rather than the negative!). In short competition is very stiff. I want to pursue a food business to cater both worlds (maybe A,B,C market). What is the best mix?
Thank you and more power!
God Bless.
Sincerely,
Fe
Jon Oraña says
Hi Fe.
You can’t cater to everybody. If you’ll study successful businesses, they don’t cater to everyone. Starbucks for example is not really for the masses.
Jollibee on the other hand is serving the masses.
You choose which market you serve then design whatever that market needs. How would you know what they want? Ask them. Survey them.
Don’t create or sell products because that’s what you want to sell. BIG MISTAKE. Sell products what your market wants to buy.

Hello Jon,
I already have started a small time financing business a.k.a bumbay pilipino style, then i came across your eskapo-logy.
Well it kinda struck me in the heart. I am an employee for the longest time…so the financing business was borne out of boredom as my employment has eaten the best of me.
Having seen the Sandy syndrome above and the advise you gave, i should have felt satisfaction. But it aint the case, i just feel something is missing in my particular case.
The financing business is still not making more than my salary, but a compelling feeling of getting out of employment is teasing me constantly.
Torn between leaving a comfort zone or not, please i do need advice.
Jon Oraña says
Hi Joseph.
I’ve been in your situation. You said “something is missing” and you are not sure about that.
That can be satisfaction, fulfillment, security, etc. What I teach my students is to have a clarity of what they want to achieve.
You’ll run in circles unless you are clear of your goals. Keep listening to my future podcast and I may discuss some of these things.

Hi Jon,
First of all, thank you for your effort on helping aspiring entrepreneur like me, it is of great pleasure that somebody is there to help/support us. I am 34 now, a former OFW who now settles for good here in the Philippines. I have been in 2 businesses before the Typhoon Hiayan strucks us here in Tacloban city. All my investments were gone, in fact I lose all my “Ipon” because of the typhoon but were still lucky we survived that’s the most important thing.
After 8 months of Yolanda’s devastation, I thought to myself I need to come back.. I want to put business again, but what I am worried now is that how can I come back if I don’t have resources now? I have small amount in the pocket, I am thinking of putting a water station again but the money I have is not enough to start again. It will be a pleasure if you can advise me what should I do next to stand up again as a Yolanda victim.
Thank you very much!

So that people will see and buy them. Please, wla akong idea tlga. Zero ako pgdating s internet. Please advise me. Thank you.

Hi Jon, i have been following you for sometime now and i appreciate it that you have been able to point out the “pain spot” of most entrepreneurs. I have already established some confidence in my part time job and I have already identified my “ideal client”. My question now is how to go about looking for them. I discovered my by accident and i don’t know how to go about replicating the situation.

hi sir Jon, hope that you can include me on your list of email regarding with your free training in starting an online business, I just quit my job here in cavite because I’m going to move in Taytay where my husband lives. Actually our plan A for me is to look for a new job around Taytay and nearby cities so that I can still support my mom and younger sister here in cavite. But unexpected things happened, I’m 2 months pregnant and my worry is if I still be hired when I apply for a job plus I need to take good care of myself because of my baby. So plan B for me is try to maximize the use of internet which is available at my husbands home … I’m also planning to try real estate selling using the internet.
Hope that my request be granted thank you.

Hi Jon,
I’ve read your eskapology about cautious entreprenuer It’s good to hear from you all about things to start a business. I have a small sari-sari store and I want it to be a wholesale grocery store. What is the best strategy on this. It was located at our subdivision only, I have only small capital and I have no fixed job at all.
Danny says
Right now I am on vacation as a seafarers…what you have suggested in starting a business is a challenge to me…starting a part time business and not leaving your full time job….how can you come about regarding my case as a contractual Filipino seafarers who usually stays at sea for 10 months and doing a part time business as well,…do you have any ideas?
arnold says
Hi Jon, seeking your advice, I’m a presently contractual employee from one of the largest company here in the Philippines (aka under agency) with no clear view specially from the salary I am getting from my employer, also very far from my residence (it take 2 1/2 to 3 hrs papunta & 3 hrs pauwe, heavy traffic I am conquering daily that make me stress), I am a former OFW but failed to succeed because of the type of employers I got. I have a skill & experience that I know I can use, and I have motivation that push me to start our own business, but the problem is;
1. What type of business should we start? and when?
2. I don’t have the money, I just have my 15/ 30 salary (aka Php 20k Gross- Tax-etc, etc), net Income nothing, after paying all our house bills (nangungupahan lang kami ng bahay) & house needs (food, baon ng anak ko, baon ko 3k per month na anu pa matitira?, ilaw, tubig, gasul, pagkain, etc, etc.)
3. I have my experience that I want to use, but no capital and fearing “world of business”, I had no business skill.
4. Need stable income, but I have only my present job (aka. “pinagtyatyagaan dahil sa sweldo”, but wan’t to quit coz’ of habitual tardiness because of “heavy traffic” that coz’ me stress, and di ko gusto ang work ko, but pinagtyatyagaan ko kasi pamilyado ako, not in the line of my skill kaya wala ako gana..pero kaya ko ang trabaho, kaso sa araw araw pagod ako, stress dahil sa byahe at tanikalang traffic, kulang sa tulog, 4hrs per night lang tinutulog ko, mahaba pa ang oras ng byahe ko sa tulog ko, kaya nawawalan na ako ng gana sa trabaho, kaya gusto ko na lang magnegosyo, kaso walang pera pampuhunan.
5. I have supervisory & little managerial skills that I want to use for.
6. I have experience in contracting a large projects, but only the capitalist earned (aka. sya lang ang nakikinabang, he is just using me.)
7. I want to pursue my career as I am the owner.
8. Me and my wife have the passion in catering business (aka we have the skill, but no money).
9. I want to use my experience as a contractor according to my skills and education, but I have no capital.
10. Finally, we want to continue our passion in when, how and what business to start for us to escape from our chain to succeed our future.
Please advice, hoping you to read my post and send feedback soonest.

cherrie Ragunton says
Hello sir Jon,
I’ve been following you for quite sometime already. And I just listened to this podcast, I am not sure if this is the sign that I’ve been waiting for.
I started my training, counseling and review center for Psychology Board exam one year ago. My center is starting slow and steady. I may say for a year, I haven’t earned a lot yet but was able to pay my part-time staff’s salary, the rent and other expenses. As of now, we have used the power of the social media to encourage reviewees who can enroll in our review program, even went to different parts of Luzon to submit proposals. We are starting our review session soon but we have few enrollees only.
And now there’s an opportunity waiting for us, just few days ago, an online review and educational website proposed a collaboration, we will facilitate review on his website but all the works shall be done by our team, from uploading of materials to online and live discussion. I was about to say yes coz this will expand our market with minimal expense like travelling, additional rent and all. But my husband would not want me to collaborate with his fear that all things we upload can be taken and used by other people. My point on this is that all materials can be taken from Internet now adays, everything’s in the Internet now, but the passion and skills we have as instructors are something they cannot take from us.
By the way, my husband is an OFW also. One of the reason why I put up this business is because I wanted him to go home when the business is profitable already. I chose this business because this is my passion, I have the skills, and education in line with this (as I finished masters in Psychology) . And as I listen to this podcast now, I was struck by your last point of ‘once in a lifetime ‘. I’m not sure if this collaboration being offered is something that answer this once in a lifetime. Currently we don’t have resources to put up our own website to facilitate the online review, but I just wanted to expand our market at a minimal cost.
I hope with all these messages and post here, u have time to notice mine as I’ve been thinking (and torn) about this for days already. I need to make decisions that is good for our business.
Thank you in advance and God bless you more.

Hi Jon,
I have decided to enroll your IBMC but lack financial for registration, today is the last day of registration. But last night I thought of asking you a favor if you could consider it. I want to push through into the lifestyle business since I am already a senior citizen. I was pinned to illness since 2014 until I left the corporate job the same year. But when I came across your name my interest was ignited and i want to push through with this eBook business. Can you consider me in your class and give me articles to write until my tuition is paid by the articles that I will write? I shall wait for your remarks.
Or if there is no possibility of my first request, can you give me some articles to write for an income? But I will be happy if you will consider the two, the first and second favor I am asking. okay I understand what you say that not all passion is converted into business. I will hold on to this.
thank you.
