Long time ago, when I was still a slave computer programmer, every after holy week vacation I always wish….
“Sana mas mahaba ang bakasyon.”
And whenever I share this sentiment to my co-worker the usual response I get is “Tama ka pare. Bitin na bitin.”
It seems every corporate employee needs an extended break.
This made me realize that probably 90% of employees fall into one of these categories:
- They’re happy with their job but make a little money.
- Unhappy with their job but makes a lot of money.
- Or worst, unhappy with their job an makes a little money.
Only a handful of employees are both happy and makes a lot of money in their job.
People like basketball player maybe? A celebrity maybe?
I don’t know.
That’s why it’s better that you design your own life.
Where you can choose…
…what kind of work you do.
…how much money you make.
…where to spend your limited time here on earth.
And in my opinion, there’s no better way to accomplish this but by having your own business.
You see, in business, it’s not always easy but at least you’re happy with what you’re doing.
Plus, the income potential is almost limitless.
What do you think?
Rod Zuniga says
Hi Jon, just a brief about this piece you wrote. Yes, maybe I am one of those employees that you mentioned but still I am happy with my work. Yun nga lang I will never be rich being an employee. When I retire, I plan to have my own business and perhaps, you could help me have a good start.
Nelson says
I pity you Rod, you should start conditioning your mind that employment will not lead you to your dream life. You should start by reading business books or get Jon course for your startup.. wag tatanga tanga kuya.

Hello Jon,
Katulad mo dati, I’m sick and tired of being an 8am to 6pm robot employee, underpaid and over worked. It’s hell every morning dragging not just my feet but my whole self to work. I have 4 sons, to in college and 2 in elem. school. Kaya it’s impossible to support their schooling and material needs. The other day while me and my youngest son, 7 yrs. old and grade 1 in public elem. school, my son told me, “Sana daddy mayaman tayo para di tayo nahuhuli sa pagbayad ng renta ng bahay. Talagang tinamaan ako doon. I said to myself, ayoko na maging empleyado. Kaya sana matulungan mo ako na maging businessman.
Thanks………….

Hi Al.
Masakit ang feeling ano? Maraming Pinoy ang nakakaramdam ng ganyan pero they feel helpless.
Lahat ay magsi-simula is education.
That’s my approach. Cautious Entrepreneurship.
Nelson says
moreover, kailangan mo i-condition ang mind mo for business. maraming bumabagsak na negosyo on the first 5 years of their existence. its because of their mindset kaya invest big time for your business education.

hi jon!
at 52 yo im still dreaming to be rich. im a single mom with three boys to support pa. thank God yung isa nasa Sydney na sponsored with the good siblings of their late father, studying ulit with the same course na tinapusan nya dito. dream ko lahat sila mkpag aral dun ng college and get masteral degree pa. kaso im still waiting pa na makatapos yung nasa Sydney at mkahanap ng good job dun para mkatulong sa ibang bros nya. three yrs yung course nya. two months p lng sya dun. mattanda na mga anak ko. sa akin p rin umaasa sa ngaun.
im really interested to this kind of business na inaadvise mo, because at my age at my mga sakit na rin na naramdaman, mahirap na lumabas lagi to find a source of income. designer ako at salesperson din sa real eastate company. at nag aagent din sa mga ibang company na nagbbenta ng mga machines. i had a good income before pero naubos na rin sa kakaprovide ko sa mga anak ko. may mga problema pa kc sila and as a mother hndi ako sumusuko na tutlungan sila until maging successful sila. dhl alam ko katuwang ko c God sa pagtulong sa kanila.
i hope you are the answer of my prayers. and i am hoping also na matulungan mo din ako to have a good income while staying at home lang. binabasa ko mga emails mo araw2 at inuulit ulit ko dahil mahina ang apprehension ko sa mga bagong technology. im a hardworking mom pero hindi pa rin naging well to do (financially) buhay namin. in fact, wla p rin kmi house.
God bless

Nelson says
teach yourself first perlinda. you must invest big time for business education and most importantly kailangan ung mindset mo, for business talaga, kasi nga di ba nahubog tayo mula bata na kailangan magaral mabuti at magtrabaho. malaking kalaban yun dahil yun ang kinamulatan natin, subconcious mind muna ang kailangang i-work out bago ka magsimula ng actual na business mo. syempre that’s without a boss

Sir bakit po hihintayin mo pang mag retire kung pwede namang habang may work ay little by little nakakapag pundar kana para sa retirement mo. Mayroon pong paraan para yung na save mong money in the bank ay kumita ng mas malaki. For example ay investment.

Hi Jon:
I am a working mom and I tried starting my business which is direct selling and I can say na medyo mahirap sa umpisa at medyo matumal din. I am employed right now and I can say na kulang pa rin ung budget namin kahit pagsamahin pa ung kita sa direct selling at sa work ko. Can you please advise me on what is the best way to do about starting a business which is long term and can really help on my family’s expense….I can also say na loaded kami sa mga loans kaya lhat ng pwdeng pasukin na business ginagawa ko….please help me on this.
Thank you!
Jon Oraña says
Hi Yhen.
Ang advice ko lagi e magsimula ng negosyo that you can leverage any combination of experience, knowledge, skills, passion, and resources.
Do this for the next 7 days. Spend 30 minutes a day just brainstorming all business ideas that you have. Get a notebook and put all your ideas in it. Even silly ideas.
You see, most people don’t “think” much. Trust me on this, if you’ll only spend time thinking and analyzing your situation, the resources that you can tap into, and opportunities around you, you’ll DISCOVER the perfect business for you.
TAKE ACTION!
Nelson says
Like! good advice Jon

You have to create a system that will work with or without you. So kahit wala ka negosyo tumatakbo parin eto ng maayos at kumikita. So i think yun ang focus mo. Having a business alone couldn’t save time for yourself and your family. If you build a system like that then you can say your “money works for you”. Just like what Jon is doing. He’s building a business that could run on autopilot and earn passive income.
Alejandro says
Can you explain what it means an autopilot and earn passive income? Give us an examples on what is it.

finding someone who is trustworthy is harder than starting and maintaining a business. i actually travel once a month or every two months from manila to the province because I maintain two stores and I could say these stores are doing well. My problem right now is how could I be sure with the people taking care of my business while I am away for a while. Its so depressing every time I discovered cheating or fraud in my business…Please advice me ..More power to u and this column.

Hi Jon, I have always dreamed of working at home, actually, I have resigned from my full-time day job last Dec 2013. The blog I would like to create was put on hold for 1 year now due to the circumstances I was in last year. I am wondering if your online course would suit my time as of now. I am a mother of 2 girls, and I am alone attending to their needs and doing all the errands and the household chores. I haven’t got a replacement for my trustworthy kasambahay who went home already last August 2014. Thank you.

Hi Jon, I am an OFW and have always dreamed of having the best of both worlds- working at home and serving my current company. Sounds greedy but working at home, to have my passive income and to prepare myself- cause I know working overseas doesn’t mean forever. So when I read and learned about e-book business, I thought of,”this is it!” I am very much interested with online jobs, and actually slowly starting.
I hope you can guide me more as I start learning e-book business “how to’s”.
Thanks and hope to hear more about this online business.

Hi Connie.
It’s not greedy. Like every other OFW and parents, they just want a better life. Starting a business doesn’t mean it’s just about you but about the people you love and care.

I am inspired by your testimonies..in fact I am now trying to make a page on WordPress as u suggested. But i dont know what to do here, meantime i just write and post my own life story and some tips “how to” on marriage life, in preparation for the e-book that you’ve been telling in your testimonies. Please provide me with detailed instructions on how the e-book is made from first to its packaging. and how to get affiliated with the online stores for selling. I got this hope from your articles..and I am now happy…knowing things are just simple and homebase and need not to spend much to make things happen. or no cash be spent at all. Hi Sir Jon,
Sana magreply ka.. I first read about you noong nagdonate ako ng konti to buy an old newspaper na nilako ng isang matandang lalaki sa bus para daw sa mga anak nya. I never imagined i’d be reading gold from an old newspaper.
I’m only 25 and I have failed 3 businesses already. I have searched and thought long about my passion. Ang passion ko, it turned out is about christian values.
I am hoping to find that market na yun. Kasi i dont know where to do my research dito sa field na ito..
I hope and pray na magkaroon na ng sagot ang prayers ko regarding my career.
Ingat po palagi. Godbless.. 🙂

Good day po coach Jon! I am a fulltime mom with 2 kids. My husband is a driver. I resigned last year as a secretary, dahil umalis na ang nag-aalaga sa mga anak ko.
I am excited and willing to learn.
God bless you coach Jon and your family!

I absolutely believe that there’s nothing wrong with being an employee as long as one is working with a good and stable company. The only problem I think is that here in the Philippines, some companies only last for some 20 or more years then they suddenly fold up and employees working for them for, let’s say, more than 15 years are left with nothing. Worst is that they have incurred PAG-IBIG, SSS debts which they already paid in full as they were automatically deducted from their payslips. Sounds familiar? This is exactly what happened to me. Now I’m stuck with doing some home-based work and projects that pathetically pay for my daily needs and public utility bills. But that’s just about it. No extra money for winding up in the mall. My only hope is that when a door closes, another one opens. I’m very interested in coach Jon’s business ideas. They are realistic and achievable as long as one knows the basics. Cheers!
