Next month I’ll be turning 40.
Looking back 10 years ago, when I was still in that cubicle world I asked myself…
“Ano kaya ang buhay if you don’t need to an office JOB?”
“What if you can do what you love to do and make money at the same time?”
“Ang sarap siguro nun.”
Oh yes! I love to day dream
But eventually, those dreams I had became a reality.
You see, what I realized as I become an adult and entrepreneur is this…
…your mind is EXTREMELY powerful.
If you can imagine it, soon, if you’ll be persistent, it will happen. It will come to pass.
The magic is real. You can make things happen with your mind.
Actually, many things happened to you that started as a thought.
Maybe hindi mo lang na realize that it started with a thought and now you have it.
It can be your spouse. The number of your children. The company you work for. The income that you have. Your fitness.
I don’t know…
But it happened to you without you realizing it that it all started in your mind.
I remember my wife and I used to imagine a life where we’re both working from home.
No more commute. We don’t have to wake up early. No more boring meetings.
Few years after…we’re now both working from home.
I work on my business and she’s a computer programmer.

Isn’t that cool?
Yun lang oras na na-save ko sa byahe and the time preparing to go to office saved me at least 2 hours a day.
That’s an extra 10 hours a week for me.
With that, I have enough time to play with my 3 boys and go to gym everyday.
While most people are rushing to their offices, I’m in the kitchen enjoying my morning coffee.
More than 20 years ago, all these work from home isn’t possible but technology made it possible.
Think about this.
You’re reading this blog post.
I can communicate to you and yet I’m thousand miles away from you.
This is NOT possible 20 years or so ago right?
In business, you don’t have to risk it all or work 14 hours a day to succeed.
You don’t even have to quit your job immediately.
When I started my business, I’m a full-time employee for several years.
Nung kaya ng kitain ng business ko ang sahod ko (actually, doble ng sahod ko.), that’s the only time I resigned and went full-time.
That’s being Cautious. Di pwedeng Rah! Rah! Rah!
And that’s what I call “Cautious Entrepreneurship.”

Nag negosyo ka na before?
Nalugi. Di kumita. Napagod ka. And deep inside you felt embarrassed?
Maybe napahiya ka sa friends mo, sa parents mo, or sa mga kapatid mo. People that you love the most.
Nobody wants to feel like a failure and it hurts.
Many aspiring entrepreneurs have been in those situations.
Oh well, guess what? You’re not alone. I’ve been there many times too. Lost millions of Pesos in the process.
And guess what? (Again.)
The most successful Entrepreneurs in the world have been there too. In fact, they’ve been there many times more than we are. They failed more than they succeed.
And guess what? (again), who are the richest people in the world? Entrepreneurs.
My point is this: It’s OK to fail. It’s part of the learning process. By making mistakes, you’re figuring out what’s working and what isn’t.
You’ll discover things that those people who gave up easily will never know.
They’ll think…”Minalas ako. Sinuwerte sya.”
Or…”Kapalaran ko to. Maging mahirap.” The victim mentality.
Hey, I know it’s a cliché but the saying “try and try until you succeed” still holds true.
But you can’t keep on trying what isn’t working. You have to try different approaches and see the results. If it’s not working, try a new approach and see the results. If it didn’t work still, try again a different approach.
Keep doing that over and over again.
When are you going to stop? Until you succeed.
My first attempt in business was back in early 2000. Did my business prosper on my first try? Of course not.
On second try? Nope.
Third try? Nope.
Fourth try? Nope. And I lost Millions and many sleepless nights.
After all those failures I realized that I need to be in a business where I can utilize my strengths, passion, skills, and natural ability.
Without all those, my chances are slim to none.
It’s like Lebron James trying to play a 3-pt shoot out against Steph Curry.
Or Steph playing low-post game against Lebron. That will not work either.
That’s why I keep telling Entrepreneurs, time and time again, you need to play where your likelihood of succeeding is higher.
One business that failed miserably in the past was a Pharmacy store or botika.
Why did I fail? Here some of the few reasons:
I have no experience in retail at all.
I don’t know anything about pharmacy.
I miscalculated the necessary capital. Akala ko sapat na. (Maraming namamatay sa akala.)
I don’t have a mentor or experienced coach to help me.
I’m neither passionate nor excited about selling Biogesic, Alaxan, Imodium, at ng Sanitary Napkins (with wings.)
There are a lot of reasons why I failed to say the least.
But that failure led me to pause, ponder, and really study how successful people did it. Asking myself…”What are their secrets?”
I read lots of books, attended seminars, and enrolled in many courses. All those investments I made in my education returned multiple times.
And most importantly I was able to start a business and have a lifestyle that most people can only dream of.
Do you know where I’m sitting right now?
I’m writing this email from a small coffee shop in Venice Italy and sipping hot cappuccino. This is the place where many coffees originated from.

Best of all, it’s just few steps away from the world famous Grand Canal.
I’m saying this NOT to impress you but to impress upon you that a dream can come true if you’ll only persist.
Start a business where you have higher chance of succeeding.
I have lots of great memories from my College days.
Binata, lots of friends, and it’s like all fun at school.
But what I regret though is not taking my studies seriously. Iskul Bukol.
In fact, I almost got kicked out of my university.
One semester, I failed too many subjects.
The head of our College Department asked me to visit his office…
“Mr. Orana, pag naulit pa ito, we’ll kick you out of the university.” He said.
That’s why, some of my college buddies can’t believe how I succeeded in business.
Frankly, ako din nung una di ko maisip pano nangyari.
And then one day, I sat down and really think through how I started a profitable business.
One of the key recipe is being in a “booming industry.”
Meaning, you should be in a business where it is booming. Booming but not fad lang ha. Big difference. You’ll know what’s booming when many big businesses are investing to it as well.
You see, no matter how good you are at certain business but if you’re in a dying industry, you’ll die with that industry as well.
Let me explain further.
Remember “Kodak”?
Dati pag sinabi mong pictures or camera…Kodak yan.
In fact, back in the days you’ll hear Pinoys say…”Kodakan mo nga ako.” Meaning, take a photo of me. Remember those days? (Wala pang selfie stick nun.)
Unfortunately, Kodak decided to continuously use film when people are opting to digital pictures.
In 2012, they filed bankruptcy. They were 5 years late to adapt to what’s booming.
Coaching is a booming international industry. In a global study released in 2012, by International Coach Federation (ICF), estimated about 41,300 active professional coaches worldwide generated nearly $2 billion in annual revenue.
The best part? Coaching is transforming lives of many people.
People are slowly but surely seeing the value of having a coach.
It used to be na pag sinabi mong coach, sa sports lang yan. But not anymore.
You don’t even need any certifications or degrees to become a coach.
A sincere desire to help someone is enough to get started.
